Trane heating and cooling in San Jose homes usually means a ducted system: a gas furnace or air handler inside, an air conditioner or heat pump outside, and sometimes a CleanEffects air cleaner in the return. When it stops working, the cause is rarely the expensive part. It is more often a capacitor, a contactor, an igniter, a flame sensor, a drain or a slow leak, and the job is to prove which before anything is ordered. What Trane sells
Gas furnaces, central air conditioners, heat pumps, air handlers and coils, packaged units, ductless systems, thermostats and the CleanEffects whole-house air cleaner. TruComfort is Trane’s variable-speed technology, which lets the compressor and fan run anywhere between low and full output. ComfortLink II is its communicating control, linking the thermostat with the indoor and outdoor units.
Cooling repair on a hot afternoon
Summer is when a Trane outdoor unit gets tested. On single-stage and two-stage units, a weak capacitor, a worn contactor, a failing fan motor or a dusty coil explains most no-cooling calls, and each is confirmed by measurement. On a TruComfort system, long runs at low speed are normal, so a fault shows up as a house that drifts above the setting or as an alert on the thermostat. Heating repair
San Jose winters are mild, so a Trane furnace may sit for months and then fail on the first cold night. A brief smell of burning dust at the start of the season is normal; one that lasts is not. A furnace that will not heat usually has a dirty flame sensor, a cracked igniter, a pressure switch held open by a blocked vent, or a limit switch tripped by a clogged filter, and the LED code behind the door window narrows it down. CleanEffects air cleaners
CleanEffects is an electronic air cleaner that sits in the return duct. It works only as well as it is kept: clean it on the schedule in its owner’s manual, with the power off before you open the cabinet. Loud, frequent snapping usually means it needs cleaning or something is bridging the cells. If the system ran hard all summer, check it before the heating season.
Replacing a Trane furnace
- Size from a load calculation, not from the old furnace’s label: insulation and windows may have changed since the house was built.
- Venting: going from a standard furnace to a condensing one means new plastic vent pipes and a drain; staying with a standard furnace means checking the existing metal flue.
- The coil and the air conditioner: the coil on top must fit the new cabinet and match the outdoor unit. If the AC is old or uses R-22, price both together.
- Controls: a ComfortLink II thermostat needs compatible equipment, or the plan needs a different thermostat.
- Permit: a furnace replacement in San Jose needs a building permit and an inspection.

Warranty and repair or replace
Register each piece by the deadline in the warranty document, and keep the serial numbers, the dated invoice, the registration confirmation and the signed-off permit together. Local notes: Willow Glen
Many Willow Glen homes are older, under a mature tree canopy, with vintage ductwork and thin insulation. Shade helps a Trane outdoor unit, but leaves pack its coil every fall, so clear it before the next summer. Old ducts sized for an earlier furnace can make a new variable-speed system noisy at the registers, so we check them before a replacement.
