An American Standard system in San Jose usually needs one of three jobs: a new air conditioner, a furnace that lights and stays lit, or a heat pump that keeps up again. American Standard and Trane come from the same parent company and share much of their engineering, so parts and procedures carry across both. For homes the catalog runs from air conditioners and heat pumps to gas furnaces, air handlers, packaged units and thermostats, plus AccuClean whole-home air cleaners. You do not need a dealer
We are independent, not an American Standard dealer. For service, that matters less than people expect: under federal warranty law, a manufacturer cannot void the standard warranty simply because an independent company maintained or repaired the equipment. Coverage can still be refused for damage caused by poor work. For a new system, some longer coverage options are tied to installation by the brand’s own dealers, and an extended service agreement may name who must do covered repairs, so read the terms before you book anyone.
Replacing an American Standard air conditioner
The outdoor unit is half the job. These decide how well the new system works:
- The indoor coil. New air conditioners use newer refrigerants such as R-454B, and the coil on the furnace has to match the outdoor unit. In most replacements it changes too.
- The furnace blower. Cooling needs a set airflow across the coil. A weak or single-speed blower can cap what a new system delivers, and a variable-speed AccuComfort unit needs a compatible indoor unit and control to run as designed.
- The refrigerant lines. Existing lines are checked for size, damage and routing before anyone reuses them.
- Power and drainage. The breaker and disconnect must suit the new unit’s nameplate, and the condensate drain needs a clear path and an overflow switch.
- Permit. A replacement in San Jose goes through a city permit and inspection.

When the furnace will not heat
American Standard furnaces light with a hot surface igniter and report faults through a status light on the control board, often visible through a small window in the blower door. Note the flash pattern before switching anything off, because a power reset can clear it.

Heat pumps that fall behind
A few minutes of cool air and a plume of vapor from the outdoor unit in winter is a normal defrost. A coil that stays iced, backup heat running all day, or cooling when heat is called points to the defrost control, its sensor, the reversing valve or a low charge. On many of these outdoor units the coil is all aluminum; clean it only with a soft stream of water, never a pressure washer.
Warranty paperwork
Coverage depends on the equipment, when it went in and whether it was registered afterward. Labor is usually billed even when a part is covered. Keep the installation invoice and registration confirmation together with a photo of every data plate: outdoor unit, furnace or air handler, and coil.
Repair or replace
Igniters, sensors, capacitors, contactors and motors are repairs. A cracked heat exchanger, a dead compressor in an aging system, or a leak in a unit charged with R-22 (its US production and import ended in 2020) is where replacement enters the conversation. You see both options priced in writing.
Local note: Willow Glen
Many older homes in Willow Glen have vintage ductwork and thin insulation. Ducts in older houses were often sized for heating alone, which moves less air than cooling. A new air conditioner on those ducts can be noisy or uneven, so we check returns and duct sizes during the same visit.
